Development story / May 2023 to August 2026
From a personal DWM setup to a complete Fedora desktop.
Across the full commit history, dwm-titus steadily moved beyond window tiling. It now combines a fast keyboard-first workflow with a polished panel, launcher, settings, notifications, safer installation, and built-in help for everyday users.
The big picture
The evolution in four chapters
A thematic reading of the history, not a raw list of commits.
Make DWM feel personal
New hotkeys, shutdown controls, cursor movement, fullscreen behavior, workspace focus, volume handling, and window placement established the core workflow.
Turn tweaks into a desktop
System tray and status work, high-refresh fixes, better fullscreen, app icons, launchers, themes, power menus, terminal presets, and cleaner releases made it easier to live in every day.
Work across real setups
DWM 6.6 updates, web apps, searchable keybind help, battery and audio improvements, and major multi-monitor, per-workspace, bar, and tray work broadened the experience.
Become a complete Fedora desktop
Installer profiles, bootable images, Quickshell, diagnostics, notifications, multi-display resilience, graphical Settings, safer previews, rollback, tests, and documentation made the system approachable.
Major areas improved
What changed underneath the headline
Hundreds of small fixes add up to six visible themes for normal users.
Faster everyday flow
Keyboard navigation, window layouts, workspaces, app launchers, fullscreen modes, and discoverable keybinds were repeatedly refined.
Multi-monitor confidence
Per-monitor panels and workspaces, tray placement, terminal routing, hot-plug recovery, and active-screen screenshots became far more reliable.
A coherent desktop shell
Quickshell brought together the panel, launcher, tray, notifications, media, quick controls, power actions, and Control Center.
Safer setup and upgrades
Install profiles, dry runs, Fedora images, preserved user configuration, validation, and rollback paths reduced setup risk.
Less terminal dependence
Graphical controls now cover displays, input, network, Bluetooth, sound, power, defaults, startup apps, and appearance.
More dependable by design
Tests, CI, diagnostics, scoped permissions, careful error states, safe previews, and recovery handling grew alongside new features.
What users gain
A lightweight desktop that no longer expects you to build the missing pieces.
Choose a Fedora image or install onto an existing Fedora system with sensible, documented defaults.
Use built-in keybind help, diagnostics, clear status messages, and visible unsupported-feature states.
Preview risky display and appearance changes, keep what works, or automatically return to a known-good state.
Keep DWM's responsive, keyboard-first character while gaining the everyday conveniences of a full desktop.
